Bintulu Combined-Cycle Gas Turbine Project To Be Operational By Next August
KUCHING, (Bernama) - The RM365 million combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) project in Bintulu, a joint venture between Sarawak Power Generator Sdn Bhd (SPG) and Mitsubishi Corp, is expected to be operational by August next year
Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) group managing director, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain, said the project was the country's biggest in terms of carbon credits. He said Mitsubishi would buy the expected emission of 595,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year at RM20 million annually over a seven-year period.
"Using the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) programme, the project will be able to generate about 110 megawatts (MW) of electricity per annum in addition to the 220 MW that we are currently producing in Bintulu," he told reporters after signing the Bintulu CCGT-CDM agreement and emission reduction purchase pact here today.
Abdul Aziz signed on behalf of SPG, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SEB while Mistsubishi was representated by its senior vice president/general manager (emissions reduction unit, new energy and environment business division), Ichiro Keida.
He was confident that with the letters of approval from the governments of Japan and Malaysia issued on June 20 and Nov 13 respectively this year, the project was expected to be registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change by June next year.
Abdul Aziz said the SPG would recruit and train over 30 local staff to run the plant.
"This project goes a long way in our commitment towards development of cleaner generation sources in Sarawak and I am confident that in the coming years, the Kyoto Protocol will be further expanded," he said.
